The Cook Barn, long a fixture on Del Obispo Street in San Juan Capistrano, was consumed by a spectacular blaze Thursday.
The blaze at 32232 Del Obispo happened about 10:30 a.m. Orange County Fire Authority units from as far as away as Laguna Niguel and Ladera Ranch fought the blaze.
About 30 firefighters arrived at the scene to battle the blaze. The fire authority dispatched an extra unit as a precautionary measure because of the wind, said authority spokesman Marc Stone.
The barn sits on the same parcel as Ocean Hills Church and Del Obispo Senior Living. Neither facility was evacuated, Stone said.
Jerry Elliot, husband of Mary Cook whose grandfather built the structure in 1898, said family members had recently been living in the barn.
The large barn stands as a tribute to the pioneering Cook family, on a parcel just north of Armstrong Nursery.
