Letter to the Editor: What’s the Deal With Baker?

Amy Borgerding, San Clemente

My family and I love the Carnival. We go each year. We were just there a couple of weeks ago and I was shocked to see Bob Baker campaigning there, given that he voted against the Carnival. I also saw him campaigning once at the Farmer’s Market, even though he voted against that, too. What’s the deal with this guy? These votes suggest to me that Baker lacks common sense, but his actions sure prove that he doesn’t lack audacity. Speaking of audacity, I read the SC Times financial disclosure article and find it hilarious and totally hypocritical that Baker repeatedly criticized Mortenson for buying campaign signs in Santa Ana when Baker paid more than $20,000 to some political consultant in Los Angeles and spent a bunch of money in Texas and other states. Furthermore, he and Chris Hamm stated over and over again that they do not take money from developers yet found it completely acceptable to let them pay for their flyers and mailers? I find that extremely sneaky of both candidates. Finally, both Bob Baker and Chris Hamm have continually pointed fingers at the other candidates for having signs at places of business, accusing them of being in these businesses’ back pocket. However, Baker and Hamm also have their signs on commercial properties, including the Valero gas station off Palizada. So much for only having signs on “friends’ and neighbors’” property. Taking all this hypocrisy into consideration, I just have but one question for these candidates: How can we trust either one of you to make decisions for our city?

Amy— I have no problem with the super hard working Hamm and B Baker#1 (not the fake guy developers put up), they are out working for EVERYone’s vote! Good for them.

The big question a lot of us have, and heck, maybe you do too? What did Mr.Dahl do with the 150k he personally took from the toll road organization? And, who was he representing when he took all that money and voted on issues on our city council? And when he showed up at many public meetings testifying against the wishes of tens of thousands of San Clemente residents and hundreds who testified, who was he representing? Us? Or the folks who gave him 150k cash?

And when Mr.Mortensen took a 10k donation from the LOS ANGELES REALTORS ASSOC. (largest donation in city history) What do you think those folks expect in return? Curious, no?

Haha. Typical Baker/Hamm supporter. Ignore all the legitimate questions, and redirect with nonsense. Check Mortenson’s campaign disclosures, Waterman. Presumably he spent it on a lot of the banners that are now up all over downtown. Or maybe he spent it on ads advertising his endorsement by the Orange County Register, Orange County Republican Party, tons of former mayors and councilmembers, hundreds of residents, etc… etc… Expect in return? nothing?

The better question is, what does Nevada’s favorite son and San Juan’s favorite developer, Charles Mann, expect in return for dumping $100,000+ into the race to support Baker/Hamm expect in return? $100k!!! My guess is quite a bit.

Why don’t you guys try something new, and post some reasons WHY ANYONE SHOULD VOTE FOR BAKER — and try to start with an idea, not why not to vote for the other candidates.

The Valero gas station posts EVERYBODY’S signs. It’s a tradition. You will find one sign for every candidate at that station on Palizada.
You will find the majority of Bob Baker’s and Chris Hamm’s signs firmly placed in front yards of San Clemente residents. I

The “majority”. Well, that’s a lot different from what they said during the debates now isn’t Kathleen. You were there, right? You heard Hamm say “you’ll only see my signs in the yards of residents.” You heard Baker say the same thing, right? Well of course you did. We all did. Only problem, Kathleen, is, like a lot of what they said, and nearly all of what they’re surrogate sugar daddies (Herr Eggleston and Mann) have said, it’s a LIE. Baker/Hamm signs aren’t just at the Valero (with everyones), they’re placed “illegally” in front of other places — like shopping centers, hotels, Top Tune, etc.. etc..

Not surprising that Baker doesn’t care if his statement proves hypocritical. After all, he’s the same guy that warned against PAC’s trying to buy the election (haha, I guess he meant it’s ok if they’re trying to buy it for him) and who railed against other candidates spending $2k on signs while he spent TEN TIMES THAT AMOUNT on an LA POLITICAL CONSULTANT. He’s also the same candidate who claims he’s conservative, and even a Republican, but who’s endorsed by uber-liberal organizations like the Sierra Club.

If you want a hypocrite, vote Baker. If you want someone with NO original ideas, who does what he’s told by adults, vote Hamm. But if you want a man of character, of unquestioned intelligence, a man of resolve and determination, someone who’s succeeded in all that he’s endeavored – vote Mortenson. If you don’t believe me, see for yourself at http://www.mikemortenson.com. Or email him — he actually returned my email and answered my questions, which is how and why I became such a big fan – well that and the fact that he’s a family man and he’s the only candidate endorsed by the Republican Party.
