Letter to the Editor: Tired of Bickering? Vote for Clegg

Linda Kidwiler, San Clemente
I appreciate the San Clemente Times publishing information on each candidate running for city council. It appears from your reader’s comments that many are tired of the bickering amongst the candidates. I am wondering why you haven’t reported more on candidate David Clegg.

His views seem to be aligned with what most San Clemente residents are looking for. He is not backed by anyone or any special interest groups and he has not spent large sums of money on campaigning. Is that why there is little press on him? If so, we should be ashamed.

I like his common sense approach to decision-making. His focus seems to be on how our money is being spent, which is what we need. He caught my attention when he questioned why our water rates continue to increase when our consumption is not. Also, he seems to be the only candidate who has questioned why we continue to be billed for San Onofre when it has been closed since January.

His views are refreshing and it would be nice to have read more about him. He is getting my vote.

New Rule. Anyone who runs for city council and wants to be taken seriously must attend all the debates and know that they will need between $15-20K to run an effective campaign. Mr. Clegg said that he would spend under the $1000 limit. He may be a great guy, just wasn’t a serious candidate. Maybe next time?

15-20k investment for a small town city council campaign is absurd. I respect Clegg’s stance on not doing that.

Jim Dahl was re elected for under $5,000 in 2008, and he got the most votes. I’d like to see a spending limit, so we stop getting a lot of negative advertisements.
