THE LATEST: A new door-to-door universal waste collection service will start this October following City Council’s 5-0 vote Tuesday night. San Clemente will join cities including Dana Point and Laguna Beach in providing a service for single-family and multi-family residential properties for the proper disposal of universal waste, household sharp items and household hazardous wastes. The cost per single-family household for this new service is less than $4 per year.
Universal waste items include fluorescent lightbulbs, common household batteries and electronic devices such as computers and cell phones. Household sharps include syringes and hypodermic needles, while household hazardous wastes include automotive maintenance and repair products, paints, lawn chemicals and cleaning products.
WHAT’S NEXT: The service, paid for through all residents’ quarterly solid waste bills, will be provided by the city’s waste contractor CR&R. Pickup will occur on the same day as the regular trash pickup day, but residents must first alert CR&R by calling a customer service line and providing a detailed list of the items being placed for collection. The city plans on purchasing containers for medical sharps and will provide those initially to residents requesting them.
According to Tom Bonigut, city environmental programs manager, the service will allow the city to meet its obligations to the state regarding waste diversion requirements as per AB939. The city will distribute informational fliers and will post information online to help detail all the items that fall within the scope of the service.
