Thank you, Jim Kempton. Your column in the July 20-26 edition of the San Clemente Times, “In Praise of the Elite,” was one of the best things I’ve read all year. When did “elite” become a derogatory term? When did it become an insult? All of my life, becoming elite in any particular area of expertise is something one would aspire to. To turn that word into a pejorative and use it to express dissatisfaction with any and all levels of American knowledge and achievement is not only insulting, but frightening. A world without elites is a world consigned to mediocrity. With each passing day I hope more desperately that this is not the road we’re traveling as a nation.
Thanks to Jim and the SC Times for sharing an important insight.
