A day at Doheny State Beach is not complete without a trip to A’s Burgers for a hearty meal at a great price. With its bright red and yellow sign popping out at visitors as they drive down Coast Highway, it’s hard to miss the restaurant just one mile away from the Dana Point Harbor.

With a San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point location, A’s Burgers has been a popular burger joint for locals since Angelo Vardakostas opened it in the early 1970s. Piled high with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, mayonnaise and cheese, the freshly made burgers seem to be a hit for visitors having spent a long day in the sun.

For customers looking to stray away from the typical order, the ham and cheese sandwich is a warm and gooey alternative. Served on golden brown sourdough bread and oozing with cheese, the sandwich screams comfort food. Customers can order the fried zucchini on the side for a deep fried, but not greasy, take on zucchini. Served with a side of creamy ranch, the fried zucchini is presented with a crusty exterior and a soft, warm zucchini inside.—Erin McFaul
