Nick is a wave magnet. In every one of his competition heats, you’ll see someone ripping a wave and ask, “Who is that?” and all his friends reply, “It’s Nick Hay-again!” Nick is that rare waterman who can surf longboards and shortboards with equal skill. He is ranked No. 1 in Interscholastic Surfing Federation (ISF) Orange County Middle School in both longboard and shortboard, and in Western Surfing Association (WSA) competition, he is third in both Boy’s 15 and under shortboard, and Boy’s 17 and under longboard. He recently won the NSSA Interscholastic State Championships for longboard and just missed making the finals in shortboard. Nick will be trying out for the USA Surf Team this week. He is one of only a dozen boys from around the nation invited to surf for coach Peter “PT” Townend for one of four spots on the team that will travel to the 2006 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, which will be held in Maresias, Brazil, May 6–14.
