The sound of thundering hooves returns to the Del Mar Racetrack on July 18 for Opening Day 2007, but those who’ve stood trackside will notice a change as the horses go racing past: a new track surface. According to Dan Smith, senior media coordinator at Del Mar Racetrack, the facility recently installed a new $9 million track which will be unveiled Wednesday. “It’s a new racing track surface called Polytrack [which is] a synthetic racing surface that provides better safety and comfort for the horses,” says Smith.
Aside from horse racing, music is a popular draw at Del Mar. Four O’Clock Fridays provide free concerts post-racing through August 31. Some big acts are lined up includingPinback (Aug. 10), Cake (Aug. 17) and Pete Yorn (Aug. 24). Also on July 28, the track will hold its annual Microbrew Festival featuring 20 breweries serving hundreds of thirst-quenching beers along with the post-race concert. There are also Saturday Infield Concerts featuring bands such as The Cult on August 25 and more.
Admission ranges between $6 and $80, and special rates are available for military and seniors. Gates open daily at 12 p.m. and 11:30 a.m. on weekends. The track is closed on Tuesdays, and the season ends on September 5. Getting to Del Mar Racetrack is easy either by car or by train. If you take the train, get off at Solana Beach and take the bus service to the track atop a free double-decker bus.
