San Clemente’s City Council voted 4-0 (Mayor Pro-Tem Jim Dahl was absent) to put out to bid Phase 1B of the La Pata/Vista Hermosa Sports Park and Aquatics Center, which represents the major structural components of the park such as the baseball, soccer and football fields as well as the swimming pools. According to the staff report, the project costs are estimated at $30.3 million.
Staff recommended bidding the entire project now in order to take advantage of the favorable construction climate. City landscape architect Tim Shaw said that other public agencies have been receiving bids up to 20 percent under their engineer estimates. Shaw said that ideally the overall bid documents will be structured as two bid packages based on construction areas of expertise; for instance, Package A would include field work, restrooms, engineering and grading, while Package B will include the development of the aquatics center and pool house.
City Council also unanimously approved an amendment to the La Pata/Vista Hermosa sports park master plan for a new land use map to include Courtney’s Sand Castle, lease area and future development areas.
Staff will bring their vendor selection to City Council no later than May 18, 2010.
