Police are investigating a report of an assault that is believed to have occurred in San Clemente in early September, according to authorities.
Sgt. Scott Steinle, a public information officer with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, said that investigators spoke with a woman who filed the police report on Sept. 15, telling them she was assaulted around 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 8.
According to Steinle, the woman did not know where the assault took place. Steinle could only confirm that the investigation is being conducted in the City of San Clemente.
“The individual says that they were assaulted … we’re investigating aspects of that,” Steinle said before reaffirming that it is unclear where the reported assault took place. “All we can say is that the lady, the individual involved in this, was assaulted, and Special Victims Unit is investigating all angles.”
Investigators, Steinle said, are looking for all possible leads and are checking security cameras in the area, such as footage captured through Ring camera systems on homes.
Steinle said he did not know what sort of injuries the woman sustained. He also said there is no description of the reported assailant.
Late Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 11, OCSD pushed out a social media post stating that investigators are looking into the reported assault. The post, OCSD said, comes after information about the reported assault had been circulated and shared on social media.
“Please be aware that the information being shared has not been verified by the Sheriff’s Department Special Victims Unit, who is currently investigating the incident,” OCSD wrote. “We appreciate our community’s patience as we work to thoroughly investigate and verify the details of this incident.”
