Laurie Gooch, San Clemente

With the Transportation Corridor Agencies’ (TCA) ineffective and ill-considered proposals to bring The Toll Roads through our town, it is unprincipled for the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce to have a TCA representative on its board and to desire to use TCA’s funds (earmarked to pay down the agencies’ mammoth debt) to support events in our town regardless of how noble the cause or iconic the event may be. The Chamber asks each of us to “Shop Downtown San Clemente” and to support our local businesses. I ask The Chamber to “Save San Clemente” and to help us defeat The Toll Roads.

  • Ms. Gooch is right— In fact, the chamber should’ve broken ties with the TCA years ago. Way back when Surfrider Fdn., a huge group of residents ,and the S. Club were in an ultimately successful 10 year battle to stop the southern SC ocean alignment of the toll road. Citizens didn’t want that alignment and now citizens don’t want any other that would hurt the city. When the Chamber has ties with the TCA, they’re telling we citizens (read-shoppers), that they just don’t care at all about what we think on an important quality of life issue that WE care about. I might as well cruise on up to Dana to do my shopping…. What’s next? Will the Chamber start having bake sales with the folks who are maintaining one of the Nations’ largest nuclear waste dumps at San Onofre?

  • ditto Ms. Gooch is right……….get the TCA out of SC’s Chamber ….Ole is rolling over in his grave
