Round 1 of the Billabong Pipe Masters tournament is set to get underway Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 a.m. Aleutian Time Zone. The event is currently on standby.
Pipe Mastesr takes place at the Banzai Pipeline off the island of Oahu in Hawaii.
The tournament was slated to start Monday, Dec. 13, but poor swell has delayed it.
“It has been tough because this window started off with really nice conditions, but we had no swell,” WSL Commissioner Kieren Perrow said in a press release. “We decided not to use that decreasing swell day one, and we’ve turned up today with a lot more swell, which is great.”
San Clemente local Kolohe Andino and former resident Gavin Beschen are in the field.
Beschen grew up in San Clemente surfing Lowers, T Street and all the regular haunts. Following in his brother Shane’s footsteps, he quickly turned pro and spent his career traveling the world and riding waves before finally settling down on Oahu’s famed North Shore.
Carving out a niche for himself as one of the best Pipeline surfers, this week Beschen finished runner-up at the Pipeline Invitational and earned himself a spot in the prestigious Pipeline Masters.
Andino is currently ranked fifth on the WSL Championship Tour this year, with an average heat score of 13.61 .
The waiting period is underway, be sure and throw some good vibes their way.
