On Monday, City Council repealed the moratorium on sober living and drug/alcohol treatment residences, citing that the ordinances passed earlier this year to regulate short-term living units (STLUs) would now encompass other temporary living establishments, including sober living homes.

The moratorium was going to expire in July, so city officials began examining what it could and could not put into law regarding sober living homes.

In order to operate in accordance with STLU code, the sober living facilities would have to get a permit and no other recovery home can be within 300 feet of it. Further regulations include the repeat nuisance ordinance, which increases fees to property owners who are liable for code compliance violations.

City Planner Jim Pechous said facilities such as the sober living homes fall under a different category and will be required to get an STLU permit if they are renting out to a single entity for 29 days or less, or boarding facility and have to get a conditional use permit.

“There are some kinds of facilities by state law that are allowed, by right, six beds or less, and in those cases the state regulation would still prevail,” Pechous said.

Currently there are two state bills that are making their way through the Assembly that would enable state regulation of all sober living homes, but they are not likely to be debated further this year.   • People who have concerns about sober living homes should consider carefully whether they’re being unreasonable and unfair. People in sober living homes are trying to conquer their pasts and improve their lives. The rest of society needs to respect this and not try to isolate them. Yes, there can be problems when residents misbehave, but these can be addressed.

    • Until it is across the street from your home of 20 years. No doubt the individuals living in the homes deserve and need care. But these are commercial for profit entities. They have NO place in a residential neighborhood.

  • stick it in your bleeding hearts ear these homes are ran by pigs for pigs and when i complained code enforcement started accusing me of all sorts of stuff
    . the worst part is you cant find out who really owns them
