Boys Lacrosse Powers Past Griffins in Playoff Opener
The San Clemente boys lacrosse team turned in an effort worthy of their No. 2 overall seed in the first round of the U.S. Lacrosse Orange County playoffs on May 2.
The Tritons played host to Los Alamitos and emerged with a convincing 16-4 win. San Clemente will host El Toro in the second round of the playoffs on May 4.
San Clemente’s victory was never in doubt, as they built up a 9-0 lead at the halfway point.
Matthew Keany led the team with four goals, two assists and three groundballs. David Howren notched three goals and two assists, Nick Lemus scored two goals and had four assists, and Liam Nelson scored twice and tallied two assists.
Senior goalie Harrison Webb had a big night in the cage, recording 11 saves.
Girls Lacrosse Survives First-Round Playoff Scare in Historic 13-12 Win
The San Clemente girls lacrosse team found itself in a back-and-forth battle in the first round of the U.S. Lacrosse Orange County playoffs on May 2. Visiting Beckman pushed the Tritons to the brink, but the Tritons came up with clutch plays down the stretch to secure a 13-12 victory. The playoff win was the first in program history.
Delainey Isles scored the game-winning goal and Tritons goalie Veronica Petrikas made a big save on a Beckman shot attempt with three seconds left to end the game. Isles’ go-ahead goal came with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Kiley Buckley led the Tritons with six goals, while Shay Hefft, Jessica De Collibus and Tesfanesh Jonas each scored twice.
The Tritons will travel to play St. Margaret’s in the second round of the playoffs on May 4.
Boys Volleyball Wins Outright League Title, Heads to Playoffs
A three-set sweep against Capistrano Valley and a Dana Hills loss resulted in an outright South Coast League championship for the San Clemente boys volleyball team on May 1.
The league title was the 11th for San Clemente (25-7, 7-1 league) in the last 18 seasons.
Against the Cougars, Kyler Presho had nine kills, Bryce Curtis had six and Jess Hunt had five.
San Clemente will now head into the CIF-SS Division 1 Championships. Playoff brackets will be released on May 5.
