Senior forward Gage Zerboni broke out of a scoring drought, sophomore forward Blayne Martinez put away the no-doubter and the San Clemente boys soccer team shutout visiting La Costa Canyon 2-0 in the CIF SoCal Regional semifinals on March 7.

The Tritons now advance to play El Rancho Saturday, March 9 at Warren High School for the SoCal Regional title. Game time is set for 6 p.m.

Zerboni, who had not scored in his previous three matches, shook off any doubt that a lingering ankle injury was hindering him with a goal two minutes before halftime that made things 1-0.

La Costa Canyon went into equalizer mode late in the second half and the Tritons were able to counter on a goal by Martinez in stoppage time. Martinez had another opportunity to score 15 minutes earlier when a headed attempt of his narrowly missed.

Senior goalie Dylan Digiacomo played the whole 80-plus minutes in the match and made some crucial stops along the way, including one off a La Costa Canyon corner in the 15th minute and again with five minutes remaining.

  • Justice has been served. Congratulations SCHS. The referee granted LCC the chance to be in the semi final. The best team prevailed. Good luck in the FINAL.
